Blanket stitch 101

Blanket stitching is another stitch that is often used in doing wool applique, especially around the edges of a piece.  So here again, we will be using perle cotton thread, yes, you can use floss if you like. A #22 chenelle needle is used, matching the threads is totally up to you. We very often do match the threads to the wool, however for our demonstration we tried to use thread that would show up. Begin by putting a knot on the one end of thread.
Pull the thread up from the bottom.
To begin stitching, I like to put one stitch very close to where I pulled the thread up from. This is about 1/4" away from the thread.  So to complete the stitch we will want to keep the thread under neath the needle.
Here you can see how the stitches looks.  Make sure you keep the thread under neath the needle for every stitch.
You can see the blanket stitch, or some people call it the button hole stitch, has a thread that runs horizontally.
This is what your stitching will look like if you don't have the thread under neath the thread. But you can easily fix it by running the needle under neath it again.
Should you need to stitch a corner in your work, this is a really neat way to do that.  Stitch along until you get to the corner. We are going to pivot stitching right from the one side, in the corner, and then on to the other side.
When you have finished your corner, continue stitching down the other side.
